What is test and tag?

Test and tag is the process of inspecting and testing electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use. This involves a visual inspection and electrical testing using a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT).

Testing frequency depends on your industry and environment:

  • Construction sites: every 3 months

  • Office environments: every 12 months

  • Factories/workshops: every 6 months We can advise the correct schedule for your business.

Is Electrical Test Tagging a legal requirement or mandatory?

Yes — test and tagging is a legal requirement in many workplaces under Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws. While not all industries are specifically mandated, all businesses must ensure their electrical equipment is safe to use. Following the test and tag process in line with AS/NZS 3760:2022 is the standard way to stay compliant and demonstrate your duty of care.

Does my equipment need to be powered off or unplugged to be tested

Yes, electrical equipment needs to be shut down and unplugged before testing and tagging can be carried out. I connect the device under test to an electrical appliance tester and run a series of checks, including earth resistance, insulation resistance, leakage current, and polarity tests.

I understand that businesses are busy, so I work closely with each customer to minimise any disruption to their operations.

Does new equipment need to be tested and tagged?

New-to-service equipment, even if it has not been previously used, is not exempt from inspection. Although electrical testing is not required for brand-new items, they must still undergo a thorough visual inspection to ensure there are no obvious signs of damage, defects, or safety concerns. Once the visual check is completed and the equipment is deemed safe, it must be tagged to indicate it has been inspected in accordance with AS/NZS 3760. This step helps ensure all equipment entering service meets safety standards from the outset.

What happens if an item fails the test?

If an item fails, we’ll place a “Failed” tag on it and include it in your test report. The item should be immediately removed from service until it’s repaired or replaced. If possible, we’ll also point you in the right direction with trusted contacts for repairs or servicing to help you get back up and running safely. we can also assist with safe disposal for an additional fee.
